Welcome to Just Ask Matt! Today, Don writes:
Matt, I want to get onto broadband. I have heard both good and bad things about DSl and cable. Which is the best to go with? I can get either in my area. Help!
That is a tough call. With cable-based Internet, you do tend to get a faster connection to a point, however, DSL is actually giving you more dependable Internet speeds that you can really hang your hat on.
The biggest problem is that cable speeds greatly vary based on the number of people who are using it in that immediate area. With DSL, this is not a problem since this is a direct line to your home.
So, long story short, Don, I would talk to other broadband users in your area. I have found that in 99% of the cases out there, DSL continues to be superior. Besides that, the DSL pricing appears to be more receptive to my needs since I get to choose an Internet package that fits my budget.
With cable Internet, this is not the case as they seem to be slow to adapt. After checking around with some friends, you will likely find that DSL is the best move. I say go DSL.
