Windows Server 2003 Support Tools

Most MCSE exams will test your troubleshooting knowledge. You need to know the different utilities available to troubleshoot a problem as well as how to use them. Exam 70-291 Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure is no exception. Your knowledge of troubleshooting will undoubtedly be challenged.

However, you must be aware of the fact that you may be tested on troubleshooting utilities that are not installed by default, but rather, are part of the Support Tools. In order to address this, I would highly recommend that you install the Support Tools to get some experience with them.

You can easily install the Support Tools using the Windows Server 2003 CD. To install the support tools:

  1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD.
  2. From the Welcome screen, click Browse this CD.
  3. Locate the Support\Tools directory on the CD.
  4. Double click the suptools.msi and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Two of the particular tools that you should be familiar with are Netdiag and Netsh.

  • Netdiag: Netdiag can be used to obtain basic network information. One change to note is that the version of Netdiag included with Windows Server 2003 does not display any IPSec specific statistics.
  • Netsh: This is command line utility that can be used to perform many of the functions of IP Security Monitor.

You should know what each one can be used for, the command syntax, as well as the command context.
