Without a doubt, maintaining control over a company’s network is evolving from a full time job into an everyday miracle. And perhaps each admin out there has their own ’special brand of justice’ for those who violate network policy, but how effective is it really? Think you might need a little extra help?
Well if you would like some assistance with making sure that malware, viruses and other unauthorized software is never a problem again, then I may have one option for you. Enter Bit9 - end to end security with the admin in mind! Yup, it’s about time something came out that truly felt like the administrator was being enabled rather than disabled.
Understand that while I have not had an opportunity to take this for a test drive just yet, I have been hearing tremendous things about the concept in action, not just theory.
Now comes the controversial part - the Bit9 FileAdvisor. While most swear by it, others are a little concerned about this much information being so readily available over the Internet. Oh sure, being able to quickly identify a specific file in a hurry is potentially invaluable. However, it is this method of file name discovery that feels a little reminiscent of the privacy concerns with Google Desktop.
To be fair though, I have seen nothing thus far that would indicate anything short of good intentions and honest results. This search engine for unknown file types could possibly be considered an honorary member of many IT depts. Who’s to say…
For the time being, I am going to have to hold off on trying out Bit9 proper as my schedule has been nuts lately. Having said this, I have had a chance to play with the search tool and for the most part I am quite impressed!
