  07.09.2002 GnomeREPORT

Lori is cooking something up for Gnomedex, but she won't tell us what it is! She certainly has me curious. I quote: "There is definitely a 'surprise' in the works for the attendees..." whatever that means. Guess you'll have to show up to find out. Friday at Gnomedex should be a blast as well. CleverMedia is officially sponsoring the Karaoke night, and if it's anything like last year, it should be rather entertaining.

While we're on the subject of Gnomedex, you might have heard about the Geek to Gnomedex campaign a while back, which aims to ensure that the presence of one ambitious, self-proclaimed Geek at this year's event. Wouldn't you know... Max Raven has shown another pure act of kindness, offering to help get this geek to the show. The spirit of Gnomedex really is shining through. It's not just another conference. We are, in many ways, a family of users, enthusiasts and geeks. The social aspect of Gnomedex is every bit as important as the speakers and other events that transpire over the two days, and to see how Max is helping means a lot to us, as do the emails of support from the rest of the Lockergnome clan. It really is what keeps us going.

See You in August,

New Subnet Calculator

http://support.solarwinds.net/updates/SelectProgramFree.cfm#

SolarWinds has released a new free subnet calculator, further improving upon a nice utility. Dealing with subnet masking is not a chore many truly enjoy, though admittedly, I am one of those strange individuals that do find pleasure in network addressing. Yes, I'm weird. So what? SolarWinds knows that geeks have a sense of humor, adding a scrolling area at the bottom of the subnet calculator window that spouts such wisdom as: "If at first you don't succeed, you must be using Windows."

WiMP Mini FAQ

http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html

Windows Media Player has been sending me into fits of rage lately, as it has basically quit working entirely under Windows XP, and because of the insistence by Microsoft that it cannot be uninstalled and/or reinstalled, I'm left with few options in repairing it short of a reinstallation of Windows XP. Thanks, Microsoft. You're so helpful. Now do you all understand why I'm so adamant that this stuff be provided as separate components? The prosecution rests.

Anyway, I was able to reinstate the ability to play local media files using a fix listed in this WiMP FAQ, though I still cannot connect to any external media at all, so it's still hopelessly broken. I also attempted an in-place upgrade of Windows XP with no success, so I'm left to fall back on the complete rebuild option. Just in case the site is Gnomed, here are the two commands that I executed:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection InstallWMP64 132 c:\windows\inf\mplayer2.inf

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection InstallWMP7 132 c:\windows\inf\wmp.inf

ASAP Excel Utilities v3.03 Excel 97/2K/XP FREE

http://www.asap-utilities.nl/

My favorite Excel add-in has seen some nice improvements since the last mention. New functions include a very handy and flexible text-to-date converter, a randomizer function, undo capability for a few existing tools and an interesting conditional cell selection routine. Spreadsheet users will not want to be without this, trust me. If you're not an Excel powerhouse right now, ASAP Utilities can transform you into one overnight. I love this thing, and I don't even use spreadsheets all that often.

Flash Communication Server MX Released

http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashcom/

Remember the days when Flash was simply used as an annoyance or cute marketing ploy? Gone are those days, let me tell you. Even though there are still quite a few sites that insist on pestering you with useless animations and bandwidth-hogging interfaces, the power of Flash has gone leaps beyond an irritating toy and into truly impressive rich media content. You have to check out the capabilities of Flash Communication Server MX if you're into content. The list of things it can do is pretty sweet!
