Instant NAS

Need some extra storage? Got an old box lying around? Check out NASLite. Rather than fussing with a full Linux install and having to maintain/patch yet another box, you can turn any machine into a Network Attached Storage device by booting from a single floppy.
From the site:
For example, with NASLite v1.x you can take a retired Pentium 200MHz computer, remove the old fixed disk drives, CD-ROMs, etc., install four 160GB fixed disk drives and have a fast, reliable 640GB NASLite v1.x file server for the cost of the fixed disk drives.
Thus, with a simple boot floppy and some old hardware, you’ve got an instant MP3 repository, file share, or space for storing backups. Rather than fuss with patches and security issues, you simply download the latest floppy image and create a new one. It’s available in Samba, NFS, and FTP versions in either megabit or gigabit Ethernet speeds.
Make with the clicky.

OK but there is 1 major drawback ATM, you can ONLY use it with IDE hard drives, it doesnt support SATA so there’s no building a file server from scrap parts and loading it with honking big cheap fast SATA drives.
Real drawback here as it’s exactly what I am doing. freeNAS is still in beta release. The search goes on!
