  10.15.2002 GnomeREPORT

You're getting this a day early as I'll be on the road to California most of the upcoming week. I'm not sure where I'll be accessing the Internet, but I'm fairly certain I'll be completely disconnected on Monday and Tuesday. Heather and I are taking a combination mini-vacation/work trip, heading south out of Des Moines, before making the westward trek to San Diego. I'll be upgrading to the latest version of Lyris, our mailing list software, when we get there.

The iPod and Archos Multimedia Jukebox are loaded with a variety of entertainment, mostly from emusic and Audible.com. I'm also setup to work on some additional GnomeTomes as we drive down the highway - I don't make a very good passenger if I'm not keeping myself occupied. The trip won't be all work by any stretch; we plan on seeing a few sights on the way and will most definitely find some entertainment once we arrive in California.

After the server has received some TLC, we'll head on up the coast, stopping in LA for at least one night before continuing up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco where we'll drop in on Chris and Gretchen. The return trip we'll be on I-80 through the mountains, with more scenic stops in the mountains (assuming it's not snowing by then). I'll be dropping notes on my blog periodically, so keep your eyes peeled there. In the meantime, if you haven't been keeping up with Lori's trip across Russia, drop by her blog and check out some of the stories. She should have some photos posted shortly.

Yours Digitally,

AceReader Pro v2.2 [2.5MB] W9X/NT/W2K/XP $49.95

http://www.acereader.com

My reading comprehension starts to drop if I'm pushing myself much beyond 300 words-per-minute. I've always loved reading; online, in print - give me information and I'll digest it. I only wish I could read faster, so I could cover more ground. Fortunately, this application is designed to help users boost their speed and comprehend more of what's being read. Whether you read ebooks, newspapers, blogs, text books, or paperback novels, AceReader is designed to improve both speed and comprehension with continued practice. Assessment tests help you gage your current skill level, using your education level to benchmark. Drills help increase your abilities by pushing you to read words at faster rates than you would under normal conditions. More importantly, drills are customizable, allowing you to import your own text to further push the bounds of your abilities and learn with content that may be more specific to your reading needs. The time you'll gain from faster reading will more than offset the cost of the application. The Deluxe version lets you create your own tests, which is useful for teachers or parents who are helping a student learn. A networked version, designed for lab environments, is also available, with the ability to control learning from a central administration point. The free 30-day demo is fully functional, missing only some additional text content for testing and drills.

BootCD v0.5 [137k] OSX 10.2 FREE

http://www.charlessoft.com/

As much as we'd all like to believe our Macs will run flawlessly, errors do occur, requiring the need to boot from a CD to make repairs. I've booted from the OS X install CD on a couple of occasions, which was considerably more cumbersome than I would have liked. This application creates a handy boot CD, complete with the ability to run Finder and the Dock, while performing simple repairs to your system. Drive10 works on boot, and even though the author claims Norton is unsupported at this time, there are reports on Version Tracker that claim otherwise. This is beta software, so you may experience intermittent errors, but it does work as expected and might just keep you from losing crucial data in the event of a crash.

Reading and Parsing Tab-delimited Text Files

http://www.blankreb.com/studiosnips.php?ID=17

Applications of many varieties output tab-delimited text files. This is useful when you need to extract data from one application and reuse the data in different, incompatible application. If you are specifically planning on importing your file to an application that supports tab-delimiting, you'll have an easy time reusing the data. However, if you want to use the content in a database, or to organize a text list, or even in an application that doesn't recognize tab-delimited text, you'll need something to preprocess the file. AppleScript is probably your best solution on your Mac. This indepth tutorial demonstrates just how easy parsing a tab-delimited file really is, taking you step-by-step through the process and introducing you to ways you can output all or pieces of the script.

Icon Yard

http://www.iconyard.com

Tell your Finder it's time for recess and swap all those boring default icons in the Icon Yard. Thundar the Barbarian is hanging out with the cast from the new Scooby Doo movie. The US Postal Service Tour de France team is chasing the Dogcow. And the extinct characters from Ice Age are checking out the Imaginary Applications collection. Icon Yard brings together a collection of the best OS X icon designers out there, provides them with a forum to present their work, and if you like what you see, you can go check out more at each designer's home site. You may remember the Dock Lawn icons I featured sometime back? There's an extension to that set, along with several other brilliant collections from the same design house. Chances are, visiting any of the designer sites will lead to more icons and wallpapers you just can't live without. Class dismissed.

Sherlock Security

Like any browsing tool, some of Sherlock's abilities may come into contact with cookies when grabbing information from the Internet. As much as my personal information grabbing preferences lean toward using Sherlock's third-party cousin, Watson, I find it refreshing to see Apple including a preference to block cookies for those that want it. For security conscious searching, open Sherlock's Preferences, click the Security tab, then opt to 'Reject all cookies' if you'd prefer. When you feel like your stash of cookies is getting too full, there's a button to get rid of all of them here as well.
