 09.13.2000 GnomeREPORT

My brain is applesauce right now. I was gonna draft this extensive paragraph about how smaller publishers lose out on bigger business deals, but decided to throw a few links at ya instead. Believe me, it's much better this way (for both of us). The last thing I need to do is get riled up before heading off to bed. Er, sofa. Gretchen's making me sleep on the couch until I burn this bleeping sweatshirt. Fine. Two can play at that game. I just won't tell her that the Lockergnome Tips file has found a new home, the Moonfish utility has an alternate download page, and a Consumer Alert for Epson 870, 1270, and 875DC (printer) owners has been issued. Oh well... she's better off not knowing. C'mon, Sprocket -- let's go. What? You don't want to talk to me, either? Ugh. This is a battle I'm afraid I cannot win.

Is Taping a TV Movie a God-Given Right -- "Next week, the Federal Communications Commission is expected to hand down its first decision aimed at preventing the Napsterization of the movie business. The Commission's action, which so far has escaped widespread attention, is the result of a push by the movie industry to prevent people from swapping digital copies of movies shown on TV – or worse, pirating them to the masses. At issue: In the future, should consumers be able to tape TV shows as easily as they do today?" One thing's for sure: we'll find a way. Don't think that you're impacted by this little ruling? When was the last time you set the timer on your VCR? Break the law or miss your favorite programs. Hrm... I'll ponder this quandary whilst I tear the 'do not remove' tags from these couch cushions. While I do that, why don't you reboot your opinions?

INotepad v3.1 [2.6M] W9x/NT/2k FREE

{Internet-aware text editor} Notepad is the tool of choice for most Web designers; a fast and simple way to scribble HTML code. It's nice, but there aren't any WHEELS, man. If you want to impress the ladies (and the gentlemen), you have to take iNotepad for a cruise. Insert HTML code with a single click, choose from basic or advanced HTML, or import an already existing file. It's an invaluable shortcut for anyone who uses HTML (or JavaScript), and a relatively useful for beginners. Don't use tags? Don't need 'em. This is a decent standalone vanilla editor, as well.

Ras2Vec v1.2 [696k] DOS FREE

"The Raster to vector conversion program takes uncompressed, 1-bit (black and white) x pixel BMP or TIFF images and [spits them into] HPGL, DXF, EMF or TXT files. You can tweak and control output in several ways; set the centerline, doubleline, specify file format preferences, polyline output, X scale factor (default 1.0), Y scale factor (default 1.0), set tollerance [0 to 10], set output directory set minimum poly length factor as max (x,y). Wildcards are allowed." This is a great utility for graphic designers, though it converts straight lines best.

Jpegcrop v2k.08 [205k] W9x/NT/2k FREE

{Resave images without loss} Save the JPEGs! OK, so it's not much of a cause... but someone has to speak up for these poor files; they've been ignored for far too long. Save these graphics without recompressing the existing compression, preserving the "original" quality of the file. It's like Tupperware for your JPEG; locking and sealing in freshness. This metaphor is especially relevant if your JPEG happens to be a picture of potato salad. WARNING: don't leave this program sitting in the sun for too long.

NameBoy
Unearthed by Kim Kalapus

http://www.nameboy.com/

{Great domain naming assistant} Have you ever typed in a URL just to see if a page by that name actually existed? Blame it on the boredom, but more and more domain names are being taken every single day. Who would have thought somebody would ever register EO3CLD6WE1NBYU.COM? You need to grab the bull by its horns and get the domain you want -- quickly. All you have to do is enter a couple of keywords, choose a site category, then you'll get an instant list of possible choices for your domain. This includes a list of site names which have already been taken and ones that are on the auction block. Give that brain a rest for a few seconds; let the NameBoy do some thinking for you.

The universe is vast, filled with so many unanswered questions. If an angel loses a game show, does it get a constellation prize? "We're sorry you've lost the game, but here's a Big Dipper for you. Use it to find your way North. This prize also doubles as a Big Bear, for your personal protection." What kind of questions should they ask in the heavens? Aren't all the answers supposed to be written in the stars? Who the heck has a magic marker that big, anyway? But perhaps I've asked too much...

 GnomeTIP

Coming from the "Recent Redux" department, Lockergnomie Matthew Williams takes another route to document launching. You've seen the 'Documents' option sitting in your Start Menu by now. That's where the fifteen most recently accessed file shortcuts rest. That was the tip? Hardly; that was the set up. You can make your life a little easier by creating an entirely new toolbar. Right-click on your Taskbar, select TOOLBARS, then choose NEW TOOLBAR. When it comes time to designate a destination, browse to your Windows \ Recent folder and click OK. At this point, drag its leftmost handlebar as close as you can to the System Tray. The only word that you'll see at that point should be 'Recent' (with small double-arrows to the right of it). Go ahead and left-click those arrows. Aha! If you'd rather keep it more accessible, select the word 'Recent' with your left mouse button and drag it to an empty spot on your Desktop. Right-click on its title bar and tell it to stay ALWAYS ON TOP. For more fun, right-click in an empty toolbar area and select VIEW and LARGE for bigger icons -- then stick the bar to the right side of your screen by dragging and dropping it there.

Every week, I'll post a new video clip here (in MPEG format); it will be taken with either the Sony Cybershot DSC-S70 or Mavica FD-95. This week, Gretchen walks down the aisle for a second time. As a bride's maid, of course.
