Somebody asked us to justify our "high" registration price ($99). Jake says: "You can walk the floor at COMDEX for free (or for the price of listening to hype). If you want to hear any of the seminars or speakers, the price climbs considerably. Same with Internet World and most other trade shows. The biggest difference with Gnomedex is: it's not a trade show. We're bringing you people from the industry who deal with issues that you the user can take home and use on a daily basis. You won't ever get access to speakers like these at Comdex (or anywhere else). These people aren't trying to sell you their software or latest tech innovation; they are people who are sharing their experiences in the computing world with everyone else. The Gnomedex site probably does a better job of explaining everything that will go on." Well, when you put it that way, it feels more like a bargain. Need to learn Linux? Get one of Tony's new eBooks! Need proof that his knowledge can turn your life around? Okay, check out what Mike Chandler just sent me: "Your pal Tony on Penguin Shell is 'da man!' Several months ago, the only thing I knew about Linux was how to rack a server and watch it quickly get hacked. That's the sad truth. In the back of my mind, I realized that Linux schooling was necessary at some point, but who has the time? Since reading [your Linux newsletter], I've learned how to use my firewall, how to monitor against malicious port scans and finally how to use a sweet script to back-up crucial data - and that's the short list! What a resource, dude! Not that you need convincing, but KEEP HIM! Oh yeah, and make sure he's at Gnomedex, too." No problem. Oh, by the way, Tony's tomes will double in price next week - get 'em while they're at a special introductory price. Support the community that supports you! See You in August,

http://nirsoft.tripod.com/utils/iecookies.html {Cookie manager} The cookie: evil spy or helpful friend? Well, it all depends on your personal preference - and since we all have different preferences, this cookie manager is the perfect tool for getting rid of "X" cookies and keeping the "Y" ones. Clicking on a cookie will give you its information, such as whether or not the cookie is secure (and you all know how insecure cookies can get). Toss your cookies to a text file, find specific cookies, or refresh the list when a new cookie is added. I wonder if the Girl Scout Web site uses cookies? And, if so, do they charge for them? I think we may have discovered a loophole in the system. Rally the troops! There's gonna be a milk dunking tonight! Also available: "AsterWin - reveals the password stored behind the asterisks in standard password text-boxes."
{Shop smarter} Do have any idea how much you can save at the store if you take the time to clip coupons and look for special deals before you leave your home? About seventy-five cents, I'd say. This super shopping supplement combines a grocery list, coupon organizer, and recipe manager all into one lovely interface. Just pick the general item from the first list (like "beans") and then choose the specific item form the next list ("kidney beans," for example). Then enter in the coupon information. Now, you can select only those items that are on sale or choose to list every item. Print out your pre-selection and you're ready to hit the aisles. Who has enough time to do this on paper? "You can match grocery coupons to a specific store or to all stores; expired grocery coupons are automatically deleted."
Plucker / Offline HTML Viewer for PalmOS
"Plucker is a suite of programs which provide an off-line web browser for PalmOS systems. According to their web page, AvantGo implements an HTML parser on the Palm device; Plucker implements the majority of the parser on the PC / server / desktop machine. AvantGo parses compressed (read: 'encrypted') HTML on the Palm device itself; Plucker parses uncompressed HTML on the server, and sends an interpreted version to the Palm. Plucker appears to render documents faster (though it hasn't been optimized for speed, really). The Plucker 'home' page is a user-defined HTML document, and is treated just like any other. The 'home' AvantGo page does not appear to be HTML; it's determined by the AvantGo configuration software. So, the history buttons don't work from the Home page in AvantGo. Plucker will support DND HTML files. AFAIK, AvantGo does not. Plucker can deal with local files using the 'file' syntax, and files within an intranet on 'https' style URLs, AvantGo cannot."
Easy Ways to Find Last-Minute Travel Bargains
Most of us aren't content paying retail for anything, especially travel. Frequent travelers have turned the search for bargains into a religion. But the dizzying amount of options can overwhelm the novice. Today I'll explore a few dazzling resources that will help you plan an affordable trip - if you're open to traveling in a general region in a general timeframe. Flexibility will be your greatest ally. Prices vary drastically based on the date you purchase tickets and how many seats are available. Don't fix yourself into specific dates if you don't have to. Weekend getaways: Get a list of current Web specials offered by every major airline at Smarter Living. Just type your departure city into the search box. Most fares are good for upcoming weekend departures (Saturday to Monday or Tuesday). Extended international deals are often available as well. Shop by destination: If you want to travel to a particular destination and you're flexible on dates, try the low-fare search engine at Travelocity. Choose your destination but don't enter travel dates. You'll receive a list of low-cost options with applicable rules and dates. Last-minute tours and packages: Tour operators such as Zolotrips often list last-minute imminent departures at a discount rate to fill space on a trip. You won't be charged a penalty fee for a late purchase because the tour operator obtained airfare through contracts with the airlines. View a consolidated list of tours and packages at Site59.com. Choose a specific date and destination: Finding last-minute deals for specific dates and destinations is difficult. If Smarter Living isn't offering any travel deals to your destination, try searching Orbitz. Some airlines have a three-day advance purchase policy so you may be able to make a purchase on a ticket just under the wire before prices inflate. What happens if you can't find a deal? If you're willing to leave your travel days open and you don't mind the hassle of ambiguity, try Hotwire or Priceline.com as a last resort. Hotwire gives you a fare based on the criteria you enter. Priceline requires that you bid on a fare and notifies you whether or not it was accepted within an hour. The sites will save you money but you won't know the name of the carrier or exact schedule until you purchase tickets. Submit Your Thoughts | Recommend It!

{Visit Earth} Mr. Gleepglop, I think you and Mrs. Gleepglop will enjoy your time in London. Please don't eat anyone. Okay, so countries advertise (online and off) in order to stir up more tourists, but what Earth itself? I'm sure aliens would love to stay here. The people who developed this site must feel the same way. It's a promotional campaign to lure visitors from other worlds to the majestic marble us humans call home. As long as their like E.T. and not Predator I'm down with that. I hate it when my face gets eaten. It's happened before, and the plastic surgery bill was out of this world. Literally. I had to get the work done on Breliaa 4. Ever been? It's lovely in the spring.
Lockergnomie Terry Bruce has a suggestion for those of us who deal with several users on Windows 2000 or XP: "I recently set up a friend's computer for later connection to his work domain. Windows 2000, Office 2000, and various tools were configured with me logged on as Administrator. Everything ran fine. As soon as I logged on under his existing domain name, Office 2000 insisted on completing the new installation - but refused to allow changes (as the user wasn't an administrator)! I tried adding this existing user to the administrator class, but with no success. The final 'down and dirty' solution? I deleted the user's profile, then I unhid the 'Default User' folder (under C:\ Documents and Settings). I copied the 'Administrator' profile into the 'Default User' directory (by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties | User Profiles). The final step was to log back on as the existing domain user. All the software worked great. I hope people can make use of this (if they're not doing it already)." You might have also noticed that you're accessing the contents of two Start menus (which appear as one). Try right-clicking on one of your groups to see what I mean - there's an "All Users" in there, too. Keep this in mind when you go to copy / move menu contents. |
