Oh dear GOD - not another paragraph on Gnomedex! "Why would I want to meet people I otherwise would never have been able to meet face-to-face? Why would I want to drive halfway across the country to rub elbows with people who are just like me?" We don't know. We just don't know. We suppose that there are always going to be some people who would rather wash their hair, walk the dog, or ride their bike instead of geeking out with people who make the Internet possible. Far be it from me to suggest that missing this convention will be the single biggest mistake of your life... Anyhow, you don't have to bring any snacks or chilled beverages with you. You don't have to pass any performance evaluations. You only have to bring yourself and a smile. And ten friends, if they can swing it. Five will suffice. If you can't find anybody to come with you, no worries - there are plenty of friends to be made at this year's celebration. If you don't go, you'll never know. See You in Des Moines,

Install and Configure Speech Recognition in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306537 I don't care who you are; at one time or another, everyone who has a computer has thought... "Wouldn't it be cool if I could talk to my computer and it could talk back to me?" Well, essentially, with Windows XP Speech Engine, it can! This article outlines, step-by- step, everything you need to know to get the Speech Engine installed and functioning on your Windows XP machine. Please keep in mind that there are some basic requirements that must be met first, though, such as at least a 400 MHz processor, Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, and a high-quality close-talk microphone (Microsoft recommends a USB microphone). Although not on the required list for speech recognition, I also recommend speakers to be able to use the text-speech functionality. Although I doubt your PC will become a HAL overnight, at least you will be one step closer!
Question: I just upgraded to Windows XP from Windows ME, and now my Intel 82810 Graphics Controller card won't let me play anything that uses OpenGL. Can I fix this or am I doomed? Answer: Don't fret! In the realm of computers, you are rarely ever doomed. Most likely, the culprit of this problem is a simple display driver. I suspect you probably don't have a Windows XP compatible display driver, so Windows is just using a VGA compatible driver. All you need to do is go to Intel's Web site, download the latest Windows XP compatible display driver for the Intel 82810 Graphics Controller card, and follow their installation instructions. I know it sounds simple... and that's because it is! On a personal note, if you are looking for great graphics, I'd look into a video card that supports better 3D rendering. Kitchen Math I am not the best cook. To me, trying to read a recipe appears to require a basic degree in Mathematics and Astrophysics. Honestly... how much is a "pinch?" What if I have tiny fingers? Should I use two pinches to equal another person's one-pinch size? It's lucky for my wife that I found Kitchen Math. With this Web site, I can type in how many pinches I need in a recipe, and it will convert that to a size I can understand, like tablespoons and teaspoons. There is even a multiplier so you can make multiple batches in one shot without having to work out a mathematical equation on the blackboard. Even if you refuse to do any cooking, then I still encourage you to check out their Web site, where you can also find a scientific calculator, units converter, encyclopedia, thesaurus, dictionary and language translator... plus much, much more!
Most big-time Microsoft Access 97 users have run into this problem at least once; it's the one where you get the error, "There is no license for this system." You've tried reinstalling Access and switching to a different database, but nothing seems to work and you are left with this mocking error. You were probably baffled because the rest of your Microsoft Office installation seemed to be fine, and the only problem was with Access. To fix this, all you need to do is go to Microsoft's Web site, do a search for "AcLicense.exe" (sans quotes) and download the program. Once you run this, all of your Access 97 file-opening problems will be gone. I've also heard tell from Lockergnomie David Rubin that there is an alternate way around this issue, and it is based around a font... I know it sounds funny, but it is true! What happens is that once Access is installed, it looks for the Office Standard font named Haettenschweiler. If it finds it, then it assumes that this is a reinstall and, instead of opening, Access 97 displays the above error. For a workaround, you can go to your Windows Search/Find utility and type in "Haettenschweiler" (sans quotes), rename the font file, and then all will be right again. What's that saying... "The pen is mightier than the sword?" Maybe that should be rephrased to "The font is mightier than the program!" |
