  10.01.2002 GnomeREPORT

I'm so proud of my parents! Not only did they drive all over hell's half acre - but they documented the experience with a digital picture or two. And you gotta understand: Mom and Dad don't embrace technology as openly as I do; their VCR has been blinking 12:00 since 1988. I got Dad a Canon S200, but he was a little reluctant to point and shoot it at first. I tried to encourage him over e-mail, but I guess all he needed was an excuse. Road trip! They arrived late this evening with several dozen snapshots ready to be viewed on the "big" screen. We offloaded them onto Zero and watched a brief slideshow; they drove through some trees, witnessed a rainbow, and met a nice moose. I'll share the album with you in a day or so. It's a little late to put anything together tonight; they're still getting stuff unpacked for their stay at the Holiday Gnome. I just hope they steal the towels; I've been trying to get rid of them for years.

As I noted earlier, I need a new cell phone / service provider. After discussing it with many people (in the Bay area and elsewhere), I've narrowed it down to the *LEAST* of all evils: Verizon Wireless. Since convenience is also a factor, I'm considering getting service through Radio Shack (which is a block away from where I now reside). I'm also considering taking them up on their current offer: Motorola T720 ($199.99 with trade-in and activation). Warnings? Praises? Suggestions? You just can't win at this game. For every cheer, there's at least two jeers. And the same holds true for every single "mobile communications" company on the planet. I'm not too worried about the phones or service plans; there always seems to be something waiting for me no matter where I turn. Except for an exceptional provider - they just don't exist.

Jake wanted me to let you know that we recently launched the GnomeTomes affiliate program. You can now make money featuring Lockergnome eBooks on your Web site or e-mail newsletter (after a few mouse clicks and some HTML code copying). So, if you like our content, why not get a finder's fee for qualified referrals? You're welcome to develop your own advertising copy to promote whatever titles you choose (since you know your audience better than we do). Of course, we can't accept everybody into this program - but getting set up is simple and completely automated to the point you can begin selling in a matter of minutes. "As an affiliate, you are provided a secure account offering access to all of your sales information and reporting, accounts receivable and payment history, and administrative tools that make the management of your partnerships very easy." So, give it a shot. Why not?

By the way, we also want everybody to sign up for a free CafePress store, then make fun of Jake's hair for your chance to win tons of cool prizes. This contest ends at the end of October 2002, so you better sharpen your tongue quickly. What are you waiting for? Start making fun of Jake's hair! What's this CafePress thing? "If you need logoed merchandise for your company, or if you're sitting in the local coffee shop waxing poetic, only to realize you've stumbled on the next t-shirt catch phrase, you can have an online store in a matter of a few minutes -without a huge outlay of cash for merchandise, or the need to have a merchant account, secure server, or a shopping cart. CafePress makes it ridiculously easy - not to mention, there's no charge for their basic 25-product store." It's fun!

Yours Digitally,

CSS Code Assembler v1.0 [248k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://bis.midco.net/jwacintro/ns/index2.html

{Create CSS} I love cascading style sheets, because they make your HTML code so much cleaner. It's great to be able to make all of your Web pages have the same fonts and background without having to code that design a dozen times. Some people have even used cascading style sheets (CSS) as a way to "skin" their site (but that topic is better suited for the Webmaster Weekly). CSS Code Assembler is a great way to speed up the style sheet creation process by giving you all of your choices in a drop-down menu. Now you can make your style sheet by just choosing the options you want, which is great if you are like me and can't remember all the options you might have to code. When you’re done, you can test the code and if it passes, you can copy the code into your current style sheet. CSS Code Assembler even has a pull-down menu to direct you to different tools and resources, such as a Web-safe color picker. If you are new to CSS and want to learn, then this is a great application to "cut your teeth on." Best of all, you can download the CSS Code Assembler to run from your computer or just run it from the Web site, as it is HTML- and Java-based.

Nuzzly v3.0.0 [2.5M] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.nuzzly.com/software.php

{Share source files} Lately, we have all heard a lot about different file sharing applications, like Napster and Kazaa. I, personally, would never download anything from these sites because I don't believe in infringing on copyrights, but the file sharing technology behind them is sound. This same idea of file sharing was built into Nuzzly. The difference between these applications is that with Nuzzly, you are sharing source code, and it is perfectly legal. Nuzzly is definitely the next-generation tool for programmers as it will allow you to share ideas, tips/tricks, and to collaborate on more advanced projects. With an Explorer-like window, you can browse the shared directories of other programmers, or do a search (if you know specifically what you are looking for). On top of all of this you can chat, either in the built-in chat section or through IRC, and view the code directly inside Nuzzly. So what are you waiting for? Head on over and check it out. Even the non-programmers out there who are looking to learn will find that Nuzzly may be a great place to start.

MOZFan

http://www.mozfan.info/

Looking for a replacement for Microsoft Internet Explorer? Then you should take a look at Mozilla. But before you do that, maybe you'd like to read a little bit about what some people who use Mozilla think about it. Mozfan.info is a Web site devoted to Mozilla - both the good AND the bad aspects. This is a great place to find news about Mozilla, and make friends with people who love the Web browser. Mozfan.info is structured very well; you can easily look up archived stories and surveys. Feel free to submit news yourself, or post a review for other readers. Hopefully the downloads section will start to fill up soon, but if not, I am sure I can make do with the information I get from the MozFan Forums. Although this Web site is somewhat new, I wouldn't be surprised to see it become the number one place on the Internet to get inside information on Mozilla. For our international readers out there, you will especially like that you can change the interface language right from the main page.

Question: What is the difference between a Palm OS machine and a Pocket PC?

Answer: Actually, what you’re asking is almost like asking what the difference is between a Macintosh and a PC! The Palm and Pocket PC operating systems are each made by different companies. Microsoft makes the Pocket PC OS, and 3com makes the Palm OS. To me, Palm OS machines are mostly just an advanced contact management system. They are great for business users who need to keep a list of contacts, to-do lists, and the occasional note all for a pretty low price. If you need a little more power, then you are looking for the Pocket PC. With the Pocket PC you can work on Word and Excel documents, listen to music, watch videos, plus much more. You can do all the contact management that you can do with a Palm Pilot, along with surfing the Internet. Both units now sport handy expansion slots - the difference, however, is the types of devices you can put in those expansion slots. Most of them can support modems, network cards, wireless cards and GPS adapters, but the variety is a little more limited on the Palm. In my opinion, if you are looking for a quick and easy way to manage your contacts and have a few games, then get a Palm Pilot. If you are looking for the power of a laptop (but don't want to carry a laptop), then I would say that the Pocket PC is for you.

Question: I am in the market to purchase a cable modem, but all the options seem so similar. How do I narrow my selection down beyond the price?

Answer: The most important thing is to check with your cable provider first to get a list of compatible cable modem manufacturer or models. Some cable providers will just say that is has to be DOCSIS compatible. After you have met the cable provider’s requirements, THEN you can worry about your personal requirements. Personally, I wouldn't buy a cable modem that didn't have an Ethernet connector. Although USB should be the same speed as Ethernet, there are several variables that come into play to affect this, and I would rather have an open USB port anyway. Many of the rest of the features are "cool" but really not necessary, like SNMP management. You would only need SNMP management if you were using this on a network with management software, like HP Openview, and this is unlikely for a home computer. The two main features I would look for are upgradeable firmware and a diagnostic HTML user interface.

And now, we continue our look around the new Gnomestead. Notice the ornate trim, the bold colors, and the complete lack of a dishwasher. Oh yeah, it's really missing.
