  11.27.2002 GnomeREPORT

Boys will be boys. It'll be just the three of us in this cozy apartment until Gretchen returns from Iowa on Saturday. Sprocket, Bruno, and myself: two dogs and a geek. Wasn't that a movie? "We" plan on avoiding turkey (in all of its forms) on Thursday and digitizing VHS tapes until the cats come home. It shouldn't be tremendously difficult to do through my GL-2. First up, the final edit for Gnomedex 2002 - which is long overdue. I plan on importing the footage into Muvee, picking a catchy tune, and letting the program's AI do the rest. There are a lot more random video clips sitting in the entertainment center; my goal is to offload most (if not all) of them onto a single DVD. Who knows what classic gems I'll uncover? I know our Wedding is in there somewhere, although it was filmed on a VHS-C camcorder at a horrible angle. I may wait for a standalone DVD recording component to transfer our lengthier filmlets (for ultimate ease). Sounds like post-CES will be the right time to start searching for a solution. We'll see. I'll have to ask Rafe what he knows.

Brian's been doing a great job with the Q&A lately. His expertise came along at the right time. In regard to Windows Product Activation, however, he was misled by a traveling Microsoft rep. Lockergnomie Ed Bott was one of the first to clarify the definition: "You can install Windows XP on the same hardware an unlimited number of times and it will activate automatically over the Internet without protest (or over the phone). Activation is only prevented if you try to install the OS on a computer that is substantially different from the one on which it was originally activated. IOW, if you make major upgrades to your current computer or install the same CD on a second computer. Even then, you can call MS and explain that you upgraded your components and you will get the activation code without any question. The only way you would be denied is if you were foolish enough to admit that you were trying to install the software on a second or third computer without a license." Knowing what I've heard from other Gnomies, Ed is correct. Again, your experiences have come to our collective rescue.

Lockergnomie Doug Dillard continues the PIM thread: "I've been on Franklin Planner since 1998. It won me over from an addiction to Daytimer that stretched back to my first (paper) notebook version in 1963. Each record gives about four email address spaces, and I can pull up my email 'Send' form (Outlook Express) by clicking on the email address on the client record. I love the FP version of ToDo, the Prioritized Daily Task List." Out of all I've seen so far, this appears to be the most versatile. Still, as Rodney Macleod reminds me, AOL is working on something, too. A few other Gnomies took the time to point out an abandoned title, NetManage ECCO Pro, with Fletcher Leggett noting: "maybe if a national celebrity mentioned it in some kind of internationally distributed publication then it might be revived." Yes, but I don't think Charlie Fleischer knows about it yet? Well, there appears to be quite a few options available to those of us who need a digital form of management in our lives. Each utility appears to have ample power, but (every time) the UI seems to fall short in certain respects. One can only hope that revisions will bring balance to the force. Kinda like Mozilla 1.2 has the potential to do (as it was just released a few minutes ago).

Yours Digitally,

AceMoney v2.1.3 [470k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mechcad.net/products/acemoney/

{Manage your checkbook} I was lucky to be born to a mother who had a strong grasp on finance, and she was more than willing to teach me everything that she knew on the subject. This knowledge has benefited me in many ways, but the key is how you keep track of your money, and one way that you can do this is with AceMoney. This application can import/export the popular QIF file format used by many online banks and Quicken. AceMoney is free (which is already a bonus in my book), but on top of that you can use this application to track your spending habits to see where all the money goes. All you have to do is set up your various accounts and then enter your bills. You can configure everything right down to the types of accounts that are available, or the categories you have to choose from when entering information regarding your spending. AceMoney can give you a report whether in graph or table form. I won't say that AceMoney is the best account manager that I have seen, as I think the ones you can buy in the store have more features, but I will say that this is the best free account manager that I have ever seen and it definitely beats not having one at all. Counterscript [77k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.xs4all.nl/~egbg/counterscript.html

{Stop telemarketers} Like most of you out there, I'm not a fan of telemarketers. I started receiving an unheard-of number of calls from solicitors, so I started screening my calls. This got tedious very quickly, and the call volume wasn't going down so I decided to make it my duty to mess with these telemarketers. I started out by playing really unintelligent on the phone, and then moved on to transferring them to local datelines, but now I have found the ultimate weapon. Almost every telemarketer works off of something called a telescript that helps them maintain control of the conversation... so why can't you do the same? Counterscript is just that, a telescript for you: the annoyed. Counterscript is a PDF file that helps you turn the tables so you end up asking all the questions. In many cases, the telemarketer will just get annoyed and have your number removed from their list, but if not, one of the questions is, "How did you get my phone number?" With this information, you can track down and find the source of these annoying phone calls to your home. I know telemarketers are people, too, and they are just doing a job, but that job doesn't call for them to persist even after I say no to their product. With that being said, telemarketers beware, because now we are all armed with Counterscript! [Brian]

The Webtender

If you give me a little bit of pineapple juice, Sprite, rum, Southern Comfort, and Everclear, then I can make you a drink called The 5th Element. I would like to say that I just know that information right off the top of my head, but that would be lying. I got all this information and more at webtender.com. On webtender.com you can browser through a listing of drinks sorted by drink, glass, or even ingredient. If you know a little more about what you are looking for, then you can use the search feature. If you are in an adventurous mood, perhaps the random drink section is for you. There is even a section called "In My Bar." What you do here is tell webtender.com what ingredients you have, and then you'll get a list of all the drinks you can make with those ingredients. All this is great if you know how to mix the drinks... but if not, then the Bartender's Handbook section is for you. In here, you'll learn all you'll need to know about bartending and mixing drinks, along with finding a huge list of drinking games with instructions. So if you want to learn how to make a great drink and impress your friends, then head over to webtender.com today. [Brian]

 GnomeTIPS

Question: I have a Magnavox 17-inch CRT monitor. I use Windows 98 and AOL 8.0. Lately, my monitor has developed an occasional flicker along the left 3 inches of the screen. It happens at various times and during various functions. Do you think it might be the monitor, the video card, or possibly something to do with the new AOL 8.0?

Answer: I don't think it has anything to do with AOL version 8.0, otherwise I think you would have trouble with your entire screen. I also don't think that this has anything to do with your video card, but a good test is to ask a friend to trade monitors with you. If you continue to have trouble, then you know it may be the video card, at which point I would suggest that you try upgrading the video card drivers before you buy a whole new card. If your friend tells you that he keeps having problems with the left 3 inches of the monitor, then you know it is a monitor problem. It may not be a serious problem, and you may be able to fix it by taking it to a local TV repair shop and having the screen degaussed. You may want to look at your computer desk environment and see if anything has changed recently. Normally, a magnetic field would cause your screen to warp, but that is not always the case. If your monitor is being affected by outside interference, then a simple reorganization of your desk may be all it takes to get your monitor back to working order. I normally can blame AOL for a lot of computer problems, but in this case I don't think you have anything to worry about with AOL. Good luck trouble-shooting... that is my favorite part of owning a computer! [Brian]

Question: What Web page editor do you recommend for non- technical people? It needs to support WYSIWYG and create good HTML code.

Answer: I'm going to warn you that I am a little biased in this area. Some people would say that you need Microsoft FrontPage, but FrontPage doesn't make the best HTML code. There are lots of little HTML editors out there, but I think you should check out HotDog PageWiz by Sausage Software. It sports the WYSIWYG interface that you are looking for, and HotDog PageWiz doesn't throw any garbage into your HTML code like Microsoft FrontPage. For those of you who don't know, WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get. This means that what you see in your HTML editor should be the same thing you would see if you were viewing the Web page from a Web browser. There are many different HTML editors out there that support WYSIWYG, but I choose HotDog PageWiz for their prompt service and excellent forums where everyone is more than willing to help. I warned you that I was a little biased, but you will be too if you give HotDog PageWiz a try. [Brian]

And now, go behind the scenes at a regular Call for Help meeting. It's not that exciting, believe me. I go every single weekday. In this scene, we just so happen to be discussing a very basic segment involving computers. Will it work?
